The Best Little Things
What makes your day special? What do you think about before you close your eyes at night? Do you smile looking back at something that happened during the day? It might be a small thing, but that’s where beauty and hope are found.
“It’s the little moments that make life big”
In the everyday race to get ahead or even to catch up, we tend to overlook what matters to us: the little things and moments in life, from having a chat with an old friend, enjoying sweets on a cheat day, or even the ability and time to drop off your nephew his lunch at school. While these may seem silly to even say out loud, they matter.
Today was one of those days that made me truly appreciate where I was in life and how I got here. My nephew recently had shoulder surgery, so his ability to carry a lunch tray is somewhat of a struggle. So, when my sister asked if I could take his lunch to him, I jumped at the chance. Having lived 3.5 hours away for most of his life, just being in the same town where I could run this over meant so much.
Just this tiny action really hit me hard with mixed emotions. There was a sadness knowing all the little moments I had missed but then true happiness knowing I was finally home and able to be there for my family and friends when needed. These little things matter, but we don’t often acknowledge them, and we don’t smile at the moment or may not even understand their actual ability to touch our lives.
When we’re thinking about our days or life in general, we tend to see the weeks, months, years, and even decades filled with milestones and goals we’d like to achieve, and nothing is wrong with that. Except for the fact we sometimes seem to forget that all these parts of life are made up of moments. Unforgettable moments, sad moments, beautiful moments, horrific moments. Small moments, small things that make up a day.
While writing this, the news is filled with sadness and terrible stories, and maybe your personal life feels like that. This is when it’s essential to look for and thoroughly enjoy the little things in life. It may be something as small as dropping off your nephew’s lunch or a random text from an old friend.
Whatever it is that brings light to your day, take notice. If we choose to ignore these, all we’re left with are our daily struggles, sadness, and frustrations. So I dare anyone who may take the time to read this to be conscious about all the little things in life that are beautiful, that make you smile, that make every day a little, or a lot, better.
